Our last hero WOD for the month of May is in honor of Cpl Ryan C. McGhee, a 21-year-old who was killed in action on May 13, 2009 by small arms fire during combat in central Iraq. He served with 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment of Fort Benning, Ga. This was his fourth deployment, his first to Iraq. Ryan was engaged to Ashleigh Mitchell of Fredericksburg, VA. He is survived by his father Steven McGhee of Myrtle Beach S.C., his mother Sherrie Battle McGhee, and his brother Zachary.

Every year, we try to honor Lt. Michael Murphy (the Navy Seal who knowingly stepped into enemy crossfire and gave his life to save the other men on this team) by pouring our hearts and souls into the "Murph" workout.

It's always a difficult workout, but we are honored and humbled to be able to give a small piece of ourselves on this day and show our respect for this fallen soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We get goosebumps every time we explain the *why*, and our athletes are always up for the challenge. We came together as a team yesterday and poured everything we had into the workout. Proud day. Humbling day. Honored to work with this crew.

With gratitude and pride, we remember our military members who died for our country and our freedoms. May we never forget the sacrifices of these fallen soldiers and may their families find peace.

Today's hero WOD (rain or shine) will be done in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, age 29, of Patchogue, NY, who was killed in Afghanistan June 28, 2005. This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he named it "Body Armor." It is now referred to as "Murph" in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

Today's hero WOD is in honor of Army Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III, 26, of Bethany, Oklahoma, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Wash.
He died September 29th, 2009, in Jolo Island, Philippines, from the detonation of an improvised explosive device. Martin is survived by his wife Ashley Martin, his parents Jack and Cheryl Martin, and siblings Abe, Mandi, Amber and Abi.

Big congrats go out to these guys & gals today! They competed in one heck of a competition over the weekend and did a bang-up job. Michael Bergmann and Amanda Fox (left) were team "Hold My Beer" & Manda Patrick and Jeremy Faircloth (right) were team "Burpees on the Rocks" at the Battle of the Brewery for CrossFit Nolensville. All 4 of these athletes pushed themselves through a very long day of hard work...and team "Burpees on the Rocks" earned 2nd place to boot!

Let's start the week with more kudos, shall we? Andy Gwinn just did 8 overhead squats with a heavier weight than what he could use for ONE overhead squat before! Yes, this means he's getting stronger...but honestly the more important part is that all his work on shoulder mobility is paying off. He's made it a priority to take care of his body and focus on getting in the right position...and it's showing. Congrats, Andy!

BIG CONGRATS to one of our #CFHkids athletes, Ian Davis! He totally crushed the Kid's Rock 1-mile run last weekend! Last year, he was at the back of the pack for his class and his age group; this year (and two 6-week CFH Kids Programs later), he was in the middle of the pack for his age group and he was THIRD with the boys from his entire first-grade class that ran. Way to go, Ian - we're so proud of you!

From his mom: "I can tell you he also looked so much better and was struggling less than last year. I stood at the same spot to catch him on the last stretch and he was having so much more fun with the run this year."
